How to be a Peer Reviewer
Step 1: Write an application letter outlining your qualifications to be a reviewer. Talk about your experience as a peer reviewer, including your areas of expertise. This should also cover the areas you wish to focus on.
- Having published research in the relevant field, and/or
- A strong foundation in applicable research methodologies.
We also welcome mentorship in peer review. Trainees may contribute if supervised by an experienced reviewer, as long as the mentor assumes full responsibility for the review’s quality and accuracy. In such cases, credit may be shared.
Lay reviewers are permitted but must clearly state their background and level of expertise so that their comments can be appropriately contextualized.
All reviewers, regardless of training or background, should decline assignments outside their area of competence.
Individuals should not apply to serve as peer reviewers if they have conflicts of interest. Any attempt by authors to pose as reviewers or register under a false identity will be treated as scientific misconduct, potentially leading to rejection of the manuscript and notification of the relevant institution.
Step 2: After reviewing the applications, the JGET Editor Staff will provide you with the application’s status within five to seven days.
Step 3: After being approved as a reviewer. Your JGET Reviewer Card will be emailed to you by the JGET Editor Staff. Your name, credentials, reviewer number*, focus fields, email address, and a table with the manuscripts you will be reviewing listed are all included on this card. Only the editing staff may view and edit this card. In the event that something needs to be modified, you can email our team with your requests.
Step 4: The editor staff will begin sending you manuscripts that we believe fit your area of expertise as soon as you are onboarded. Feel free to contact us at any time throughout this phase if you believe the subject assigned to you is outside of your area of expertise.
Step 5: After receiving your manuscripts, you will have a certain amount of time to complete the initial evaluation. After that, you will receive a link to complete a form that you will fill up based on your assessment with the manuscript. The authors of the manuscript will receive this after it has been received by the JGET team, and they will have ample time to revise it.
Step 6: The document will be sent to you, the reviewer, for another reading and review when the authors have finished modifying it. A second form will be completed to assess the manuscript’s quality. After approval, this will be posted on JGET’s website with the authors and peer reviewers properly credited.
